Red Door Real Estate Partnership with TAP Program (Monroe Township High School)
Red Door Real Estate is one of many businesses that welcomes Monroe Township High School students weekly to job sample as part of the school’s Structured Learning Experience (SLE) program. SLE means experiential, supervised educational activities designed to provide students with exposure to the requirements and responsibilities of specific job titles or job groups, and to assist them in gaining employment skills and making career and educational decisions.
Red Door provides a comfortable, safe, friendly and welcoming environment for the students to practice Job/Work Readiness Skills. The job tasks vary according to what the agency needs help with. The students complete mailings for the office, including folding documents into bi-folds and tri-folds, stuffing the documents in the envelopes, and affixing labels on postcards and envelopes. The students have also helped by shredding documents and bagging the garbage for disposal. This job sampling experience gives the students an opportunity to practice and complete job tasks in a different setting outside the high school. It helps the students to practice their communication skills with other adults as well as problem solving skills.
The partnership with Edward Nugent at Red Door and his staff allow the Monroe Township H.S. Transition Adult Program (TAP) students to provide their helping hands at the office weekly. These students between the ages of 18-21 years old are unique and capable individuals, even though they have disabilities. They are welcomed each time they job sample at the office and completely accepted by the entire staff.
The students are always accompanied by a teacher and/or paraprofessional job coach each day they arrive at the office. This experience teaches the students to navigate a new setting outside of school and helps them to learn to look to other natural supports in a different environment. This endeavor is to assist and help businesses and at the same time it helps the students generalize their learning in the community. This is a win/win project. All involved benefit.
